Ayurveda, the name for the traditional Indian medical system, is based on prehistoric literature that emphasises a “natural” and all-encompassing approach to physical and mental health. Ayurvedic medicine includes products (mostly made from plants, but also occasionally from animals, metals, and minerals), nutrition, physical activity, and way of life.

According to Ayurveda, a person who maintains their connection to themselves is considered to be healthy. Each person has a definite nature all their own. based on which his “Swadharma” and “Swakarma” function. We might simply refer to it as “nature.” Thus, health can be defined as a natural, healthy emotion that is rooted in one’s nature. That is, a person who eats a diet that is in line with his nature always stays in good health. The person who consumes dietary habits, on the other hand, is surrounded by illnesses. It should therefore be kept in good health at all times and should not decline. Additionally, this is Ayurveda’s primary goal.

Monsoon happiness and relief from heat, but it also contributes to various diseases like cough, cold, conjunctivitis, skin diseases, and malaria. Poor diet during this season can deteriorate health.

आदाने दुर्बले देह पक्ता भावति दुर्बलः।

स वर्षस्वनिलादीनां दुषणैः भांतिते परिया।

Rainy season brings dirty water, increased germs, and increased acidity in grains, leading to contaminated bile, phlegm, and disorders of rasa and rakta. This results in slow digestion and agitation of the digestive fire, affecting the doshas Mandagni, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. To mitigate these issues, consume astringent, bitter juices, and a diet with minimal fluid intake.

At this time the chances of occurrence of diseases are high. Therefore, special care should be taken towards health. In this season, it is beneficial to consume foods containing sweet, acid and salty juices. Apart from these, consumption of lukewarm milk, meat juice, different types of oil (proven from medicines) and ghee is good from the point of view of health protection. Consuming barley bread, Sathi rice, wheat bread, semolina, lapsi, old shali rice rice is beneficial in this season. It is healthy to take medicines like Arishta, Asav etc. in this season. But they should not be consumed at night.

Healthy diet and intake method in rainy season

During the rainy season, consume light, easily digestible, and simple food items to avoid sluggishness. Eat only once during the four months and avoid undigested morning meals and nightly meals, as this can cause the Mandagni to dim.

Rainy season is a time for addressing vata dosha, which is aggravated by sweet juices. To mitigate this, consume sweet juice-containing substances, light and old food, and barley, wheat, and rice. Sathi rice is easy to digest, while rice flour is carminative. Peeled pulses, especially moong, are beneficial. Mixing honey in food intensifies digestion, protects from indigestion, air disorders, and fatigue.

Buttermilk, especially during rainy seasons, increases digestion efficiency and immunity also increase vitamin C intake. However, curd consumption can be harmful, especially during Sawan-Bhadon.

In the rainy season, avoid oily and spicy foods. Sesame oil is beneficial for airborne disorders and can cure vata dosha. Consuming 40-50 grams of sesame and cold water daily can improve digestion. Consume ginger, garlic, green chillies, and lemon daily to avoid seasonal diseases. Drink lemon juice and sugar before lunch to protect against acidity, but avoid after meals. 

In the rainy season, use vegetables and fruits after washing to remove soil and germs. Consume okra, Parwal, Kumhda, bottle gourd, Torai, and Chichinda for health. Mango and Jamun are beneficial fruits, acting as tonics for the intestines and stomach, and killing digestive and abdominal disorders.

Boil water before drinking to prevent contamination in wells, stepwells, and ponds. Rainy season water accumulation increases mosquito risk, so avoid mosquito bites and use mosquito repellent sprays and smoking.

Sleeping should be avoided, because it has an adverse effect on our health. Exercise these days should be light and little. Due to this the clay of the body is exploited and the digestive fire gets intensified. But doing more exercise or labor is prohibited in this season. If you want to go out of the house in the rain, do not get wet. Keep the body covered with rain coat or umbrella. Do not go out without a torch in the dark of night, because there is a danger of poisonous animals.
